Rome Tourist Guide Activities For Children

Activities for Children

At first glance Rome, city of museums, galleries and works of art, doesn't seem a particularly family-friendly tourist destination. But this is an unfair assessment to make of the city, which actually offers more than a few activities that will surely delight the youngest members of your family. In fact, Rome possesses a wide variety of places that are equally entertaining to both children and adults - you just have to know where to look!

Rome's ancient centre, the Coliseum, Forums, catacombs and the Via Appia Antica can be very interesting to children. The stories surrounding these historical ruins will definitely appeal to their imagination. However, the amount of walking and the long waits that are involved in visiting these places (especially during the summer season) could exhaust a child's patience after a while.

If the real thing doesn't stir the children's interest in history, the Time Elevator and its use of the latest multi-media technology might. This flight simulator takes you on an exciting and interactive ride through more than 3,000 years of history, explained through the use of enormous, multimedia projections. Each session lasts 45 minutes and turns the spectator into the journey's protagonist. Sessions take place every half an hour from 10am to approximately 10:30pm. Since this ride is intended primarily as a tourist attraction, the sessions are conducted in a number of different languages (English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Italian).

The best places for a rest and for children to play are Rome's many parks. These vast expanses of lush greenery offer a number of activities for children. Rome's largest public park, Villa Doria Pamphilj, is located close to Trastevere, but it is best to take a bus since the walk up the Monte Gianicolo is long and steep. The park takes up a wide area of carefully maintained gardens and forest, criss-crossed by a number of paths for walking or cycling. The Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi has a merry-go-round and a place for children to ride ponies. Another park with lots of fun things to do for the little ones is Villa Borghese, where you can rent row-boats or visit the city's zoo.

If you want to add a little learning to the fun, visit the Explora-Musei dei Bambini. This museum is specifically designed for children who are 12 years old or younger. Everything in the museum is built according to their size, allowing children to not only see the displays but also examine and touch them.

Another popular spot is the amusement park Luna Park in the EUR area. Although undeniably fun, this park isn't any different from its counterparts in other cities. If you have any doubts or want more information on children's activities, visit any of the city's tourist information offices. The offices can provide you with lots of detailed information on the subject, including pamphlets on different bike rental places and routes that are ideal for a family outing.

One thing is certain - you won't encounter any problems when it comes to dining. Roman cuisine – especially the pizzas, pasta and ice-cream – are a child's culinary dream come true. Any restaurant you choose is bound to have plenty of options that will please even the most demanding young palate. If you want to treat the children to some exceptional ice-cream, keep an eye out for the Giolitti chain which runs several ice-cream shops throughout the city.  Giolitti serves an astounding range of ice-cream, including inventive, new flavours that are guaranteed to surprise both young and old.
