Rome Tourist Guide Museums

Museo di Roma in Trastevere

The museum is located in a building that once served as the main convent for the order of Barefoot Carmelites from 1610 until the unification of Italy. The museum contains an exhibition that focuses on popular Roman culture between the 18th and 19th centuries, brought to life by paintings, sculptures, models and installations that perfectly recreate that period in time. The so-called Scene Romane hall is the historic centre of the museum's permanent collection, whereas other halls host a number of temporary exhibitions.

The collection includes paintings by artists like Ippolito Caffi, Vincenzo Morani, Salomon Corrodi, Adolphe Roger and Teodor Aerni. The paintings all reflect scenes of quotidian life or classic local celebrations, such as the Carnival, the religious holidays of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, the patron saints of the city, or festivals relating to the wine harvest.

There is also a special section dedicated to the poet Trilussa (1871-1950).
