Piazza del Quirinale

The Piazza del Quirinale, an elegant, spacious square, takes its name from the palace that occupies it, which served as the pope's summer residence throughout the 16th century and is now home to the president of the Republic. The palace is only partially accessible to the public, and its magnificent gardens can be visited just once a year, on June 2nd, the National Day of the Republic. It is believed that the Palazzo del Quirinale stands upon the ruins of the ancient temple of Quirinus.

An obelisk marks the centre of the square, flanked by the statues of Castor and Polux, two excellent replicas of Greek originals from the 5th century B.C. Facing the Palazzo del Quirinale is the Palazzo della Consulta. The palace with the unmistakable, elegant, white facade is now the seat of the Constitutional Court of the Italian Republic.
