Located between the Piazza del Campidoglio and Piazza Venezia, the Santa Maria in Aracoeli Church sits atop the Capitoline Hill, the smallest but most sacred hill in Rome. The church is well-known for housing a number of outstanding Roman art pieces that date back to the period between the 13th and 18th centuries. The most astonishing works, however, are the magnificent frescoes by Pinturicchio, which were completed during the Renaissance. Another peculiar piece is a statue of the Christ child, which was supposedly carved out of an olive tree from the Getsemaní Gardens, where Christ was captured by the Romans following Judas' betrayal.
